Cocoa reached Florence at the beginning of the 1600’s and hot chocolate quickly became a fashionable beverage. The monks of the Officina served it to guests who stayed at the convent during the Capitoli Generali, as recorded in a memoir dated 1751. This chocolate liqueur made of cocoa and milk, is flavored with Alkermes which gives it a spicy taste. Shake before pouring, and serve chilled, with cream or with a leaf of mint. Particularly good served with ice cream.
