Santa Maria Novella is one of the oldest pharmacies in the world. Founded by Dominican friars in 1221, the year of their arrival in Florence, the pharmacy used medicinal herbs grown in the monastic gardens to make medications, balms and pomades for the monk’s infirmary. The iris is referred to as “Shu-tu-wu” or “from the heavens”, in ancient manuscripts kept in a Tibetan monastery. Of ancient Asiatic origin, it grows wild in hills of Tuscany and is so common that it became the symbol of the city of Florence. In Greek mythology, the goddess Iris was a messenger who bore good news on the rainbow. In flower symbolism the iris represents majestic beauty.
